NEW YORK (CNN) --The drugmaker Pfizer said Friday it will pay $3.4 billion in fines and other payments to settle lawsuits brought by plaintiffs who claimed their drug caused cancer and heart attacks.
"We believe there are many drug companies that can bring these types of cases," Pfizer spokesman Dan Kesselheim said. "We're not going to hold them accountable and will continue to pursue their causes."
The case was brought by the New York-based drugmaker in federal court in Brooklyn. The complaint alleges that Pfizer knew or should have known that its blockbuster arthritis drug Celebrex, marketed as the world's first-ever arthritis medication, caused heart attacks, strokes and other serious health problems.
The allegations come as Pfizer faces a $3.4 billion fine on the drug's maker, Pfizer Inc., for improperly marketing the drug.
"Pfizer has made significant investments in research, development and marketing of Celebrex. All of these investments are important to Pfizer and we are proud of our commitment to its future," said U. S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Rod J.okingly.
"This case is a huge victory for Pfizer," said J. P. Morgan P. Morgan in a statement. "Pfizer, through its marketing and development partnerships with other drug manufacturers, is in a position to continue to fight for the benefits of its blockbuster arthritis drug."
The suit was filed in federal court in New York. Kesselheim said Friday that the U. Food and Drug Administration has not approved Celebrex for uses in adults and children younger than 18. He also called on Pfizer to immediately stop marketing its blockbuster arthritis drug.

ByDr. Steven N. Ostroff, M. D., F. A. T. S.Professor of Medicine, St. Mary’s Medical Center, St. Paul, Minn., is a leading authority on the topic of “Celebrex,” a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This article is a summary of the ongoing work of Dr. Ostroff in his role at the Department of Medicine, St. Mary’s Medical Center.
This study is the first to evaluate the effect of a new celecoxib drug on the inflammatory response to NSAID-induced COX enzymes.
In the study, patients were divided into 2 groups: (1) patients with mild-to-moderate acute or mild-to-moderate arthritis, (2) patients with moderate-to-severe arthritis, and (3) patients with no evidence of arthritis. The patients were given celecoxib, celecoxib monotherapy, or placebo. The results of the study show that the celecoxib group had less COX-1 and COX-2 expression compared to the placebo group, although there was no difference in inflammatory response.
